What is KALPANA?

Technology meets Humanitarianism

"Nothing is impossible for women, if they have a strong will". These were the words sent by Kalpana Chawla to all Indians, especially young girls. The name of this event is in rememberance of this woman who taught girls to dream of wings. She was the first woman of Indian origin to travel into space on NASA’s Space Shuttle mission, Columbia. Although we lost her in a tragic Space Shuttle disaster, she still remains an epitome of inspiration and motivation for all the men and women around the world and especially for the aspiring youth of India. So this event is an opportunity for all the intellect heads out there seeking for opportunities to prove that they got that will inside them.

The Women In Engineering [WIE] Chapter at IEEE PESIT South Student Branch presents to you a one day event which aims to bring Technology and Humanitarianism under one roof. This event consists of two main facets:-

Technology:
This facet of Kalpana consists of engineering students from various colleges across Karnataka to showcase their projects which solve real world problems currently existing in the society today. Check out our list of domains here. A stringent selection process will shortlist the best ideas/teams who can participate at this project exhibition. Since we are also supporting more women to enter into the field of Science, there will be a criteria of having at least 1 female member per team. Ample amount of time will be given to the shortlisted teams to prepare their projects for the same.

Humanitarianism :
Around 47 million young men and women around the world drop out of school by 10th grade. With such advancements in technology and awareness among people, this ratio can not be left unnoticed. So this facet of the event is aimed at inviting students from underdeveloped government schools across Bangalore to provide them with a talk delivered by appropriate speakers regarding their career and future. This is done in order to encourage and motivate them to complete their formal education even after high school. We believe that having events like this, would play a key role in incentivising the future of India. [This will be a private early morning session conducted by the branch before the competition formally begins].

We at PESIT South Student Branch trust that we have a moral responsibility as future engineers to give back to the community we live in. We hope that you believe in the same spirit and participate in Kalpana, 2018.

Steps for students:

Step 1:

Find a team. The maximum number of members per team is 3 with a strict criteria of having at least 1 female member per team.

Step 2:

Take a good look at our problem domains here

Step 3:

Select a domain you wish to work on. Here, you have to find a problem statement under that domain before you begin to work on a solution for it. Ex: Under the domain ‘Waste Management’, your problem statement may be ‘To provide a more feasible waste segregation system’.

Step 4:

Register with us here and send us your abstract at kalpana.ieeepesitsouth@gmail.com .
Click here for the format of the abstract and an example

The Last date for registering is the 31st of August
The registration fee is
  • ₹200 per head, for Non-IEEE members
  • ₹160 per head, for IEEE members

Step 5:

The shortlisted teams will be allowed to participate and exhibit their project on a date which will mentioned soon.

All the best!

  2. The solution to the problem cannot be a preexisting one. The team must think of a method to develop on the current solutions and bring forward a better one, or think of a completely new solution. Any kind of plagiarism content more than 30% leads to a negative score.
  3. The solution to a problem cannot be a social experiment. It must be a technical solution with proper scientific approach.
  4. The idea must be feasible, i.e., it should have the potential to be easily implemented in, and accepted by society.
